Bizkaia
The Basque Country is an area in Northern Spain around the Pyrenees border formed by Bizkaia, the province on the Western side of the Basque Country,Gipuzkoa the province on the East and Araba the province on the South.
We arecapable of combining innovation and traditions without losing the connection with ourroots. Our historical heritage is easy to appreciateon the coast line and interior natural protected areas either on walking tours or private transport from industrial to actual cultural one.
As part of our Basque identity, we share a Basque language or Euskara, spoken in Spain and France at the western edge of the Pyrenees. The latest figures show that out of a total population of around three million, some 900,000 people speak Basque. As Josean Artze said hizkuntza bat ez da galtzen ez dakitenek ikasten ez dutelako, dakitenek hitz egiten ez dutelako baizik (a language does not disappearbecause the ones that do not know it study it, but because the ones that know it do not speak it).
Our traditional rural sports do also make this part of Northern Spain a unique place to enjoy different experiences & activities, that we can go to experience them such as herriKirolak, Jaia Alai&traineras (racing of boats at sea come from the past time fights between fishermen to reach first the shore in order to sell their fish first).Traditional sports have their origin in the daily work that used to be carried out at the rural homes (baserri) but industrialisation brought them to the cities and from being daily tasks, they gradually becameactivities that took place in festivities & championship competitions.
